How to Organize your Closet
Overwhelmed by cluttered clothes on hectic mornings? If you feel the same, keep reading. Since I have a lot of clothes, my closet gets messy very easily and sometimes it is hard to find the dress I want to wear.
As chilly weather is about to come in September, it’s time to replace your closet space with Fall items and store outdated past season items.
A clean and well-organized closet will help reduce your time to get dressed. The following simple tips and steps will lead you starting the day feeling in relief.
Step 1: Before start organizing, check your closet if there’s something you don’t wear anymore. Throw, donate (you may get a tax deduction too) or sell your old clothes and keep your closet have a room for new items. I know it’s not easy to get rid of your old clothes. You might think that you would wear them next year. However, if you haven’t worn the items this season, the chance to wear them next year is lower.
Step 2: Take a look at your closet and decide what to keep and stow. Hang the items you mostly wear at your eye level while storing the less wearable items in the bottom and garment boxes. To make your closet chic and clean, try to use just one type and color of hanger.
Step 3: Organize hanging items by color, length, and type. For example, all your white shirts should be hanged in group by color. Then, classify by type of fabric and length from light fabric to heavy and from sleeveless to long sleeved shirts. Put light colored items first and then dark colored items on the back.
Step 4: Arrange folded items. Light fabric items such as t-shirts and knits are better to fold and store in a drawer. Keep the items by color (from white to neutral to bright to dark) in a drawer to look neater. That way it is easy to decide how to match the item with others. To make more room, you can roll up light fabric shirts.
Tops:
If your closet is big enough to hang everything, I would recommend to hang them all so that they are easy to see and you can match easily and make more outfits. Sweaters would be better to fold if you don’t want them loose original shape. For cashmere or wool sweaters, replace moth balls every six months. Using a folding board to make perfect folds is a good idea.
Bottom:
Organizing pants by color, brand, style or fit is mostly your personal preference. In my case, I organize most items by color from light to dark colors. For jeans, I prefer to store by style and fit (such as skinny, straight, boyfriend, wide/flare and destroyed). For skirts, hang them using clips by length from mini to midi to maxi skirts.
Dresses:
As I mentioned earlier, I recommend hanging by color rather than style or fabric type. The reason for hanging garments by color is that they are catchy this way and get noticed easily therefore you can wear them frequently. When you pick up your dresses from dry cleaner, take off the cover immediately and change to proper hangers. I know some people think that keeping dresses in dry cleaning bags maintains them in clean condition and regard as a good thing. However, I must say chemicals from dry cleaning are not good for your skin and also damage fibers of your garment.
